Chapter Federation, have volunteered to take out an expected 80 active soldiers from Fort Drum for a day of fishing.“It’s our way of giving thanks,” said Mike Cusano, of Clay, who is president of New York B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsmen’s Society). “All the boat captains will provide all the equipment and offer instruction on how to fish.”Cusano said they’ll be two soldiers per boat and they’ll be allowed to fish for any species in the lake and the nearby Oneida River that are in season. They won’t be able to target walleyes, bass or pickerel, he said, but everything else (panfish, bullheads, carp, sheepshead, etc.) is game.
Oneida Lake is closed to pre-season catch-and-release bass fishing, Cusano said, but the soldiers will be able to target bass, if they wish, in the river. Those fish will be quickly released, though, and won’t be considered for the contest and the prizes offered at the end of the day.

Spring - From late winter to early spring, expect the bass to start moving into shallower water. They will begin their transition from the main lake into the creeks and bays. Pre-spawn largemouths will be found on the main lake points and typically the first secondary points. From mid-April through early May, you can expect most of the largemouth bass to have moved shallow to spawn. It all depends on the weather and a cold front can easily push bass out of the bays into deeper water. Follow the fishing reports to get an idea of when the bass fishing heats up. It can get really good here. Bass will be feeding on a variety of baits such as crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits, soft plastics and live bait. Once bass get into their post-spawn pattern you can typically still find plenty of bass shallow, but it is mostly the smaller males. The bigger females will move to deeper water to recover from the spawn and they will be harder to catch.

The Overhand Cast
The overhand cast has you aiming at the area straight in front of you. Raise your fishing rod up, making sure to keep your elbow close to your ribs. Flip the rod sharply behind you, and then use your wrist to flip the pole forward. Use the rod's movement to aim and follow through on your cast.
The Sidearm Cast
In this cast, you'll be once again facing your target area squarely. This time, though, hold your rod parallel to the water and at waist level. Move the rod sideways and behind you to your right, then whip it forward towards the water.
The Underhand Cast
The underhand method also begins with your rod at waist level and parallel to the water. This time, though, it should be at a 45-degree angle from where you want to cast. Start with your lure six to eight inches down. Quickly move the rod tip in a half-circle formation, releasing the lure when the rod is at the bottom of the circle. Remember to keep the rod tip down and only raise it if you need more distance or control.
In all three types of casting, there are a few key points to remember. When casting, try to minimize the amount of noise and splash your lures make when they hit the water. Always - as stated above - cast with your wrist and not your arm or entire body. It's also a good idea to drop the lure a few inches before you cast, which will give your cast a little bit of extra momentum.

* Water heaters, ice makers and air conditioners need special attention. When pumping out the toilet system, add -50 RV/Marine anti-freeze.
* Change the gear oil in outdrives or lower units to make sure no water is present and refill with fresh gear oil. Grease all fittings.
* Fog the engine with fogging oil to prevent internal corrosion. Pirko recommends that you add the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank for fresh starting in the spring. It is best to store the boat either with an empty tank or almost full tank to prevent water condensation, he adds.
* Mildew prevention bags and dehumidifier pots will help keep the boat interior fresh and dry. Leave cabinets open. Remove and take home your boat batteries. Store in a warm and dry place.

Crab boats remained docked yesterday after the National Weather Service issued a small craft advisory for the California coast, according to a Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations spokesman.
'This is a regular occurrence during crab season,' spokesman Zeke Grader said. 'People are always getting stuck in port due to bad weather. However, this particular advisory is worse because we've already lost the beginning of the season due to the oil spill.'
The small craft advisory could continue into early this week, according to the National Weather Service.

When you're done fishing and before you leave the launch ramp, trim the outboard motor all the way down, remove the kill switch and turn the engine over for a just a second to pump out any water that may still be inside the motor. Remove any mud or plant debris from the boat or equipment and thoroughly drain livewells or anywhere else water may have pooled to stop the spread of invasive species. Storing the boat high and dry for two days before fishing a different body of water can also help,especially when its cold outside.

The line should be a low stretch monofilament in about 12 to 17 lb. test, Berkley XT is good choice. I will also spool this up on a Shimano Calcutta bait casting reel. Two new threats have sent shivers throughout New York state’s sporting community, as imported diseases and exotic species continue to threaten both fish and wildlife.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the discovery of the presence of the invasive algae didymo (Didymosphenia geminata) in two of the East Coast’s premier trout streams.
Didymo, also known as rock snot, was confirmed on both the East and West branches of the Delaware River. The invasive algae was first found in New York earlier this season along the Batten Kill River in Washington County.
The discoveries along branches of the Delaware River is particularly troubling due to the proximity of several other renowned trout streams, including the Beaver Kill and Willowemoc Creek, since the most common transport mechanism for didymo is believed to be traveling anglers, who may work several rivers in the course of a day.
All it takes to spread didymo is a single cell of the microscopic algae, carried on damp waders, wading shoes, fishing net or flyline. Anglers are advised to use the proper cautions of checking, cleaning and drying equipment to ensure that it isn’t carried to new watersheds.
On the wildlife front, DEC has begun an investigation into about 20 whitetail deer found dead in Albany County earlier this week.
Preliminary tests on two of the animals indicate that the deer died of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD — the first cases of EHD confirmed in the state.

Thefts of big boats with big engines, known as go-fast boats, are on the rise in Florida. Not only do they provide a lucrative payoff for thieves — the boats cost up to $300,000 — many are stolen to smuggle people and drugs, authorities say. One in every 10 boats captured during a smuggling operation was stolen, said Lt. John Humphreys, a member of the investigations section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

“If you’re going to rob a bank, you’re not going to take your wife’s car to do it. You’re going to steal (a car) so you can dump it,” Humphreys said “The same thing goes for smuggling.”

A nine-nation operation to curb lucrative illegal fishing in the Pacific Ocean has detained two Taiwanese tuna fishing boats.
The detention of the vessels capped a 10-day, $US15-million surveillance effort, Operation Big Eye.
Big Eye included the use of patrol boats from Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Papua New Guinea, the air forces of Australia and New Zealand, US Coast Guard planes and ships, and a French Navy frigate.

This summer's Dragon Boat Festival continues to make a splash-- now with a local nonprofit.
The festival drew 77 teams, 200 volunteers, and more than 20,000 spectators to the Burlington waterfront in August. It raised $36,000 for the Vermont Respite House-- a hospice for people living their final days.
Rowers presented a check to the Respite House's directors Monday night. The money will be used to buy three new state-of-the-art beds, oxygen concentrators, and pumps for delivering pain medication. It will also pay to make the house's doors accessible to the disabled.

I'll also run one out the back of the boat on a float. Usually the one out the back of the boat, I'll run much shallower. Remember when sucker fishing to move your boat slowly. Wildlife officials detected the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus in the lake system in May, alarming the state's fishing community.
Anglers fear it could devastate Wisconsin's billion dollar-plus fishing industry, and if left unchecked, threaten waters to the west.
The virus poses no threat to humans, but can cause a wide range of trophy fish, including musky, trout and bass, to bleed to death.
It already has spread through much of the Great Lakes, causing massive fish kills. Ohio wildlife officials estimate the virus wiped out hundreds of thousands of freshwater drum in Lake Erie last year.
The virus hasn't been detected in Lake Superior or the Mississippi River _ yet _ but it has appeared in inland waters in Michigan, New York and, now, Wisconsin.
"It could escalate all over the country eventually if left unchecked," said Steve Severing, assistant tournament director with Angler's Edge Premier Bass Series in Loves Park, Ill.
Wisconsin wildlife officials are downplaying the virus' impact, stressing that it remains isolated in the Lake Winnebago system.
"Is it going to wipe out fishing? No," said Mike Staggs, Wisconsin's fisheries management director. "But this is a threat. A significant threat."

Ramps are clogged because inconsiderate people get in a hurry and forget to do the things that must be done before launching. Here's a quick list of things to do before lining up on a boat ramp. So that no one can call you a "Ramp Hog," keep it with you and use it.
1. Make certain your boat is gassed and its batteries charged. If it doesn't start, get it off and away from the ramp.
2. Prepare your boat in the ready lane or some place other than the ramp proper to load gear, ice chests, skis, and whatever else needs to go inside the boat.
3. Unhook and un-strap the boat from the trailer before getting in line.
4. Then, get in line; other people want to get on and off the water, too. Blocking the ramp for even a few minutes only causes friction.
5. Turn off your vehicle lights while backing down. Blinding the guy in front of you won't make friends and influence your neighbors.
6. Never, and I mean never, leave your rig tied to the dock. One boat in the way might as well be 10. If it has to be left, moor or anchor it over near the bank with someone watching it.
7. After being launched, start your engine and move away from the dock. Don't return until the person parking the vehicle stands at the end of the dock to be picked up.
8. Learn to properly launch and load your boat before heading to the lake. If you aren't experienced, then ask someone who is to help.

Most people have a number of lures in their tackle box that could use refurbishing. It's something I usually do in the winter, but it's also a great rainy-day summer project.
Spoons are simple to clean. If shiny silver, gold or copper-colored spoons have become tarnished, you can restore the shine by rubbing them with ketchup, a tip I saw in an outdoors magazine.
I tried it, and the reader who sent in the tip was right -- the little packages you get at fast-food joints are good for one or two spoons, depending on how tarnished they are. And ketchup doesn't leave an oily, chemical film in the water as many metal polishes do.

Didymosphenia geminata can, during the heat of summer, cause serious environmental problems. Didymo blooms create thick mats of a gray, white or brown cotton substance that can literally cover the bottom of shallow, rock-bottomed streams, smothering plants, insects and mollusks and destroying fish habitats.
This algae is more dangerous to streams, especially shallow rocky streams than lakes. But like any invasive species, don't play around if you care about the environment. Standard check, clean and dry procedures will also protect against the spread of other undesirable organisms.

The Lifesaving Society is sponsoring the week to highlight its main methods of addressing the problem, through education of the public. A toolkit is available on the society’s website to give tips on preparing oneself and their families, and they are encouraging water education events throughout the province at local pools and chapters.
“We continually try to get information out to parents and young people that they need to be more conscious about what they do around the water,” said Gorman. “We know that in Canada, if people have reasonable skills they can get themselves out of trouble.”
She said it’s important that everyone, especially children, have better instruction in swimming, and the program Swim to Survive was created to address this. Simply educating every child in Canada on basic swimming skills would “drastically reduce” the number of drownings, she said.
“That’s the best thing now,” said Dave Adamson, program representative for first aid and water safety for the Red Cross, especially in the proper use of equipment with boating during the summers.
